The Internet's original FTP site list.

FXP

Many people ask: What is FXP? To put it quite simply, FXP is the direct transfer of files between two remote FTP sites.

When you FXP, the files are never downloaded to your computer, they go directly from one FTP site to the other, at the maximum sustainable speed between the two servers.

For example, lets say you have a 56k connection. You run into an FTP server on a T1, full of files (we will call this Server A). You would like to back these files up, by copying them to another site. You know of a public FTP server on a T3 (Server B). You can now FXP all of the files on Server A to Server B at T1 speeds.

Unfortunately, not all FTP sites are compatible with FXP, but many are. The only way to find out is to try. If you encounter consistent errors during the FXP, its pretty safe to say that one of the servers is incompatible.

Currently one of the best FXP Programs out is FlashFXP. You can download FlashFXP in our Download Center.

Using FXP with Wingate

You can use a Wingate proxy to FXP to FXP-incompatible servers. First you need to get the address of a Wingate proxy. You can get a current list of Wingate proxies by clicking here.

Start up FlashFXP. With your first FXP session, connect to: wingate-proxy.on.loser.with.cablemodem.com, login: filezaccount@ftp.tripod.com, password:the-tripod-password on port 21. In the other session, connect to: filez.dynip.com, login: filez, password: leech.

Now, you can use the FlashFXP "move" feature to move files from the dynip ftp server to the Tripod ftp server, even though FXP is disabled on the Tripod server.

Note: When using FXP through a Wingate, your transfers will be limited by the maximum speed of the Wingate you are going thru. Be sure to use a fast one.
